Are Scooters Good For The Environment?

Scooters are generally smaller than other vehicles so they use less materials to produce and ship. Moreover, thanks to their smaller engines scooters get much better mileages than cars. By burning less petrol per mile you will emit less greenhouse gases help keeping the planet clean. In general, then, scooters are relatively good for the environment. However, there are big differences between scooter engines and when you take into account all pollutants rather than just carbon dioxide some of them can pollute as much as SUVs!

Motorized scooters with two stroke engines are very fast and are cheap to make but because they burn a mixture of oil and petrol they emit more carbon monoacid and hydrocarbons in their exhaust which are very bad for the environment . Two stroke engines also create an unpleasant smell and more noise. 4 stroke engines may be a bit more expensive and you do need to change the oil every 1250 miles but they are much better for the environment and their engines last longer than 2 stroke

Whatever type of scooter you choose, your driving style can dramatically effect your emissions too. Fast driving with lots of acceleration and breaking will consume more fuel than driving at a steady pace and anticipating when you may need to stop. It is also true that engines are more efficient when hot than cold, so on a long journey you will pollute less per mile than on a quick trip to the shops.

Electric scooters are becoming more and more popular, not just because they are cheap and environmentally friendly but also as they avoid road tax and congestion charges thanks to their low emissions, and can be cheaper to run than a petrol scooter. Although some pollution is created when generating the electricity the bike uses, a power station is a far more efficient engine than the one on a scooter so the amount of emissions per mile is significantly lower.

They are also better for people's health; since the electricity is normally generated away from city centres where people live and work the pollution is also kept away from town centres, leading to a cleaner environment and better air quality for everyone.
